  4. TV provides a rare glimpse of Marilyn Monroe's last film

  9.     Not long after getting fired from her last, unfinished
  10. movie, Marilyn Monroe sent a telegram to Robert Kennedy. In it
  11. she declined an invitation to visit the Kennedy clan, making an
  12. odd, wistful joke by way of explanation. She was too busy
  13. "protesting the loss of minority rights belonging to the few
  14. remaining earthbound stars," Monroe said. "All we demanded was
  15. our right to twinkle."

  17.     And twinkle she has. More than 28 years after Monroe's death
  18. from a drug overdose at 36, the star's legend has not just
  19. endured, it has prevailed. The tide of Monroe reminiscences and
  20. memorabilia flows on. Two weeks ago, a watercolor self-portrait
  21. by Monroe, painted in 1955, was displayed in a collection of
  22. artworks by 40 celebrities, assembled as a benefit for the
  23. American Cancer Society. A series of photos of Monroe at 19,
  24. taken by an Army photographer when the actress was working at an
  25. airplane factory in 1945, has been unearthed for an exhibition
  26. opening Jan. 3 at the Helander Gallery in Palm Beach, Fla. A
  27. close friend, actress Susan Strasberg, is writing a book about
  28. Monroe, due out in 1992.

  30.     Now a TV documentary re-creates the sad final chapter of
  31. Monroe's career; her work on Something's Got to Give, the 20th
  32. Century Fox film left uncompleted when she died in August 1962.
  33. The hourlong special (Thursday, Dec. 13, 9 p.m. EST, the Fox
  34. network) unveils raw footage that had been thought lost until it
  35. was discovered in a warehouse on the Fox lot in 1982. Written and
  36. narrated with nicely understated affection by producer Henry
  37. Schipper, the documentary gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes
  38. glimpse of a Hollywood star -- and a Hollywood studio -- in
  39. extremis.

  41.     In Something's Got to Give, a remake of the Cary Grant-Irene
  42. Dunne comedy My Favorite Wife, Monroe was cast as a woman,
  43. presumed dead, who returns after five years on a deserted island
  44. to find her husband (Dean Martin) remarried. The TV documentary
  45. shows that contrary to Hollywood lore, Monroe was not listless
  46. and drugged-out in her last film appearance. In fact, she looks
  47. terrific (she had lost 15 lbs. for the part) and seems alert and
  48. spirited in the clips -- especially in the famous nude swimming
  49. scene that landed her on magazine covers around the world.

  51.     But Monroe's frequent absence from the set threw the
  52. production into turmoil. She called in sick for the first two
  53. weeks of shooting, arrived late or not at all many other days and
  54. enraged studio bosses when she left the set to fly to Washington
  55. for President Kennedy's birthday party. As shooting fell further
  56. and further behind schedule, Fox executives, already reeling from
  57. budget overruns on the Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton
  58. extravaganza Cleopatra, fired her and sued for breach of
  59. contract. But they quietly hired her back weeks later when
  60. co-star Dean Martin, out of loyalty to Monroe, refused to work
  61. with the actress chosen to replace her, Lee Remick. Monroe died
  62. before filming could resume.

  64.     Marilyn: Something's Got to Give includes interviews with an
  65. array of people who took part in the filming, from producer
  66. Henry Weinstein to the former child actors who played Monroe's
  67. children. Wonderful nuggets of Marilyniana emerge. Her
  68. insecurities led Monroe to demand that a blond extra be tossed
  69. off the set and later to complain that co-star Cyd Charisse was
  70. padding her bra. When the Shah of Iran visited the Fox lot
  71. Monroe refused to meet him until she found out Iran's position on
  72. Israel.

  74.     And the movie? From the unedited clips and outtakes, a few
  75. things become clear. Beleaguered director George Cukor was
  76. something close to a saint. Monroe was almost laughably miscast.
  77. And the film looks like a dog that would have done little to
  78. revive her sagging Hollywood career. For her thriving legend,
  79. however, it should be boffo.
